Search for Back-Up

Mikel Arteta is searching for a goalkeeper following Emiliano Martinez’s departure earlier this week.

The Gunners had known that the Argentinian was looking to leave in the search of first-team football. As a result, Arteta has been preparing for his departure and has identified several targets, one of whom is Raya.

The Brentford goalkeeper was impressive during his first season with the Bees. He featured in all 46 of their league games last season, keeping 16 clean sheets in the process. Raya’s dominance in-between the sticks saw him share the Championship Golden Glove with Millwall’s Bartosz Bialkowski.

As a result, Arsenal have been keen to bring him to The Emirates as back-up to Bernd Leno.

However, Brentford are in no rush to sell. They have  rejected the advancement of the Gunners, and are not keen on losing their first-choice goalkeeper.

The Bees, according to the report, are willing to come to compromise. Raya will only be able to join Arsenal providing that he is loaned back to Brentford for the season.

Imminent Arrival Will Not Affect Brentford Chase

The Gunners are close to completing the signing of a back-up ‘keeper. Runar Alex Runarsson is expected to join from French side Dijon in the coming days.

However, his arrival will not affect Arsenal’s pursuit of Raya. Arteta is keen to maintain competition for the number one spot following the performances of Martinez towards the end of last season.

Runarsson is expected to join the Gunners in a move worth in the region of £1.5 million.
