The diminutive Uruguayan will leave Arsenal and join Atletico Madrid on loan, according to James McNicholas of The Athletic.
While Torriera will leave Arsenal initially on loan, the report also says that Atletico will have an option to buy.
Lucas Torreira Set to Leave Arsenal and join Atletico Madrid
What Happened to Torreira at Arsenal?
After a bright start, Torreira has struggled in North London. The man who was once seen as the answer to Arsenal’s midfield problems has been unable to adapt to the English game.
Last season, he only made 29 appearances in the Premier League, averaging a measly 53 minutes per game. In those minutes, he was unimpressive. As a defensive midfielder, he averaged just over one interception and tackle per game.
The Athletic are also reporting that the main driver behind this deal was Torriera himself as the Uruguayan was desperate to play more first-team football.
However, his departure to Atletico doesn’t mean that Arsenal will seal a deal for long-term target Thomas Partey as The Athletic are reporting that these two deals are separate pieces of business.
Torreira Seems Like a Great Fit for Atletico
For Torreira, this move seems like a great fit. Not only will he be able to fulfil his wish of first-team football, but he will work under Diego Simone. El Cholo has a similar personality to Torrieira and has a history of getting the best out of fiery characters.
An example of this is Diego Costa. The former Atletico man played his best football under Simone and really delivered for the club.
Finally, the pace of La Liga may suit Torreira. The Uruguayan has impressed in both Seria A and at the World Cup. It would be foolish to write him off and a change of scene to a country whose culture and football more closely resembles that of his native Uruguay may just be what he needs.
