Arsenal keeps hold of their star playmaker as Mesut Ozil signs a new deal keeping him at the club until 2021. The German international put pen to paper on a contract worth £350,000 per week.
It has been a very busy week for the Gunners, who earlier on Deadline Day signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a club record fee.
“We’ve Got Mesut Ozil”
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club record of £42.4 million. He enjoyed his best season to date with the Gunners in 2015-16, when he was voted as the campaign’s best Arsenal player.
During that term, Mesut Ozil registered 19 assists in the league, the second-best ever tally in the competition. He also created a goal in seven consecutive matches during that magical season, a record for the Premiership.
Since joining Arsenal in September 2013, no other player has created more Premier League assists than Ozil, quite a feat in the world’s richest league.
The player has had a successful international career. Ozil won the 2014 World Cup with Die Mannschaft, featuring for them 88 times throughout his career.
While a Premier League has eluded the crafty playmaker during his Arsenal tenure, he has aided the club in lifting three FA Cups. Mesut Ozil’s new Arsenal contract will keep him at the Emirates until he is 32 years old, perhaps a statement of intent from the player.
The Gunners will likely feel secure in their attacking options at the moment. Alexis Sanchez may be gone, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan has switched in his place.
Meanwhile, Aubameyang and Lacazette are in their own right accomplished players and should combine for a lethal partnership. However, there will still be questions about the Arsenal defence.
Ozil and Arsenal currently sit in sixth in the league table, struggling to stay relevant in the race for top four. The Gunners are also in the race for the Europa League and will face Ostersunds FK in the round of 32.
